The Wedding Dress of Princess Theodora of Greece
50,000 crystals and 1,200 hours of hand-crafted embellishments created in Athens’ oldest haute couture house proved to be the perfect recipe for the Greek royal’s wedding ensemble
Theodora of Greece looked enchanting in her custom Celia Kritharioti gown, crafted from hand-painted organza and French lace adorned with exquisite crystals and delicate handmade flowers. The dress was crafted from silk organza, with a truly unique element: hand-painted detailing. Each brushstroke was carefully applied, creating a stunning visual effect that sets this gown apart. In addition to the painting, the dress features intricate handmade embroidery, designed to complement the overall aesthetic while adding depth and texture. This combination of artistry and craftsmanship ensures that the gown is not only beautiful but also a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects both tradition and modern elegance.
From the initial sketches to the final fitting, the process took several months of meticulous planning. It began with countless consultations to capture the vision and essence that a royal gown demands. Each element was carefully considered, from the choice of fabric to the smallest embellishments. Each fitting was a step closer to perfection: a royal wedding dress crafted with love, perfectly matching the grace, quality, politeness, and elegance of Princess Theodora, an exceptional and loving bride.
The embroidery was one of the most labor-intensive aspects. Intricate floral motifs, inspired by centuries-old royal patterns, were hand-stitched onto the fabric In total, over 500,000 tiny crystals and flowers were applied, each one by hand. The craftsmanship took a team of artisans nearly 1,200 hours to complete. Every detail was assessed and refined through several rehearsals to achieve the right balance of shimmer and sophistication.Princess Theodora's royal wedding gown, made with love, embodies her grace, quality, politeness, and elegance. "I wanted to express kindness, grace, modesty and humility of Princess, to reflect her personality on this dress. Initially, I thought it could only be a pure white silk lace, as gentle as she is, as pure the image of Theodora. Due to circumstances, the wedding was postponed, and the dress evolved gradually, with discussions, fittings, and alterations. As a result, the inspiration came from a blend of her personality, the principles of our fashion house and our commitment to elegance and femininity, and from nature. We looked at archival gowns worn by queens and princesses of the past, but also drew upon natural motifs—floral patterns, and soft flowing lines—to add a sense of freshness and vitality. The idea was to create something regal yet full of life, a gown that embodied both tradition and modernity", said Celia Kritharioti at Tatler.
"Since our atelier was founded in 1906, we have had the honor and privilege of dressing royals and powerful women from around the globe. This rich heritage has instilled in us a deep understanding of tradition and a passion for innovation. Our gowns are a testament to our ability to seamlessly blend timeless elegance with contemporary flair", she continued.
